Credit card bills ‘biggest secret’ between co-habiting couples

The size of credit card bills is the biggest kept secret between co-habiting partners, according to one new survey.

A poll by Engage Mutual found that more than one in five Britons who lived with or were married to their partner admitted keeping a financial secret from them, with 36 per cent of those claiming it was the state of their credit card bills.

Bank statements came a close second, although over one in four also admitted keeping the real cost of their luxury purchases a secret.

However, Karl Elliott, 3GB spokesperson for Engage Mutual Assurance, warned: “It is important that couples discuss their finances, particularly when children are involved.

“As the needs of the modern family change, financial worries can be a major cause of relationship breakdown.”

He added that choosing financial products as a couple as well as going through finances together can help to “keep communications open”.
