Credit card shoppers spend £381m on Christmas Eve

Credit card shoppers are expected to spend some £1.5 million per minute today as the Christmas Eve rush gets into full swing.
Research from Sainsburys Bank has found that some £2.14 billion will be spent on Christmas Eve this year as people use the last remaining hours before Christmas Day to buy gifts and food.
And around £380.9 million of this is expected to be spent on credit cards.
Donald MacLeod, head of cards at Sainsburys, said: “It looks like the shops are going to be busy on Christmas Eve as a lot of people intend to do a significant part of their shopping then.
“Our research would indicate that the overall spend in the Christmas Eve rush is going to be considerably up on last years.”
And leaving it until the last minute is most likely to happen in the north-east, Yorkshire and Humberside, as the banks research found that people in these areas leave an average 18 per cent of their overall shopping to Christmas Eve.
