Credit card warning for Brits shopping abroad

Millions of people are planning to spend money overseas on credit cards, according to new research from the Post Office.

As many as 2.4 million people in the UK are planning to use plastic abroad in the run up to Christmas, either on their holiday or in search of the perfect gift from overseas markets.

However, credit card experts are warning that hidden fees on some cards could leave many shoppers with a festive hangover come the New Year.

Post Office director of lending Gary Fitton said: “With 49 per cent of UK holidaymakers planning to use their credit card when shopping abroad many people could be returning from their Christmas break with a lot more than just memories and mementoes due to hidden card charges.”

He warned that many credit card holders could end up paying a typical 2.75 per cent for each transaction overseas.

“Regardless of where people are travelling to this Christmas we are urging holidaymakers to ensure the only baggage they return with is the luggage they are carrying and not unnecessary card charges,” Mr Fitton added.
