Although Christmas gift shoppers may not be spending as much as they used to with cash, credit card holders are splashing out more than ever, according to reports.

And some shoppers are even leaving it to the last minute, with Research by Sainsburys has found that around 18 per cent of shopping on credit cards left until the last possible moment.

This adds up to some £2.1 billion of the estimated £11.85 billion spent in the last week before Christmas.

Donald MacLeod, head of cards at Sainsburys, said: “Credit cards can be a safe and convenient way to do your Christmas shopping and some provide great rewards for using them.

“There are a number of credit cards to choose from all offering different terms and conditions so it is important to ensure that you have the right one for you.”

The credit card lenders survey also found that people in the north-east of England and Yorkshire leave their spending the latest, with an average spend of £339.84 in the last week up until Christmas.
